What Makes LED Monitor Technology Better Than LCDs?

Recently, shopping for a television set is no less than walking inside a candy store. The sheer list of options that you are presented with is enough to overwhelm any buyer. Add the innovation of technology to that list, and you will find yourself scratching your head, wondering which one to buy.

The most commonly found television screens include LED, LCD, QLED, OLED, and UHD. While you might think that you need to know all details about each type of television, the main confusion arises when you have to choose between an LCD and a LED screen. While the abbreviations may look the same, the technology used is widely different.

LCD Vs. LED Technology

The primary difference between the two lies with the technology used to display pictures. Firstly, you should understand that a LED monitor, short for Light Emitting Diode, is just another improvised version of the LCD monitor, short for Liquid Crystal Display. This only means that even if all LED monitors are LCD in nature, not all LCD monitors are LEDs.

When LCD monitors first came out, they revolutionized the industry by using cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL). Basically, they included a small fluorescent bulb to provide a backlight and eventually display a picture on the screen. However, later, this technology was worked on, and the fluorescent bulbs got replaced with LED backlight technology.

The OLED technology improves on this even further by omitting the requirement of backlighting altogether. In addition to that, LCD displays required mercury for their production, which was deemed to be harmful to the environment. LED monitors, however, do not need that, hence are better for the environment.

Now that you understand the basic technology used in both kinds of monitors, it is time to know which one is a better investment. · Energy Efficiency:

As mentioned earlier, LCDs use fluorescent bulbs for backlights, while LEDs use light-emitting diodes. This only goes to show how much more energy-efficient LED displays are. For instance, a 32-inch LED television will consume at least 10 watts less power than an LCD monitor of the same size. The good thing is that the power efficiency only increases with the increase in screen size.

· Size:

The light-emitting diodes used in LED monitors are considerably smaller and lighter than the fluorescent bulbs used in LCD monitors. This is mainly because fluorescent bulbs have an inherent thickness to them, which is not the case with diodes. On top of that, numerous diodes are placed on the same plane, meaning irrespective of how many diodes you add, it does not alter the thickness. This only goes to say that LED monitors are slimmer than LCD panels. It has been seen that a Led panel is only one-third of the total thickness of LCD screens of the same size.

· Viewing Angle:

Although edge-lit LED, monitors have a drawback when it comes to LCDs when compared to LCDs. This is mainly because of the positioning of the light source. However, with direct-view LED monitors, you can enjoy better viewing angles than any LCD monitor can ever offer. In direct-view LED monitors, the light source is evenly spread, making it a better viewing experience.

· Response Time:

For those who do not know, response time mainly refers to the time it takes for the display technology to shift from one colour to the other. These times are so quick that are calculated in milliseconds (ms). The lesser response time a particular television screen has, the better is its image quality. In this segment as well, LED TVs are the winner, with much shorter response times than an LCD TV can ever reach.

· Contrast:

Lastly, you should pay attention to the contrast produced by the screen. Better contrast will mean that you get deeper blacks and more vibrant colours out of the images displayed. Since Led monitors use a full array of backlighting instead of one big backlight, they tend to offer better contrast as well.

While LCD backlighting only shows black and white, with LED backlighting, your television screen can produce the whole RGB spectrum. This allows it to offer better RGB contrast.
